Simple Challenge 2

Another simple challenge--no special conditions. I suppose you could say the picture itself is the challenge of a simple challenge.

P.S.: I should probably let everyone know I have comments to this blog set to "Always Moderate", which means I have to look at the comment and approve it between it being submitted and it being posted. This is just a preventative measure in case some spam gets through, and you can generally expect me to check this place every day or two unless I'm away on a trip or something. The point of this is, if your comment doesn't appear right away, don't panic and try to post it three more times. I promise it's there.

With a mouthful of sand and soaked clothes, a man woke up on the shore of a deserted island amongst the wreckage of his small ship. He must have been out for a while, because the sky was clear and there was no sign of the storm that had ruined him. He got up and looked around, collecting the belongings of him and the woman he was ferrying across the sea. There was no sign of her, but everything she brought with her- weapons, treasures, and clothes- had washed up near him. She was probably dead, so if he ever got off of this island, he could sell her junk to buy a new ship. Most of it seemed really valuable, but the thing that caught his eye the most was just a flower. It had all of the properties of fire, but the physical form and beauty of an ordinary tulip. It was amazing to him that it hadn’t been extinguished by the water, let alone that it survived the sea and washed up onto the shore in perfect condition. He kept it with him during his solitude on the island, and spoke to it, as if it could hear.

Time passed, and it began to look more and more hopeless that the sailor would never return to the mainland. Would he be stuck on this island forever, with only a flower for a friend? He spoke to it, and held it close at all times. It made him feel better about himself. When he woke up each night, he felt slimmer and his skin was smoothed. When he rubbed the petals over his face, facial hair would burn away, acting as a natural razor. There wasn’t much excess food on the island, so the sailor’s fat figure was quickly trimmed down, except for a couple spots on his chest where the fat remained for some strange reason. His hair was growing, and fast, but there was no reason to bother cutting it short since he was all alone. His body had changed since the man had arrived on the island and found that flower, but he wasn’t sure how. He had no mirror, and his memory of his old face was slowly fading anyways.

Finally, after months of waiting, the sailor saw a ship heading straight towards the island! He gathered up all of his belongings and signaled it towards him. When the ship pulled on shore, a familiar face came to the deck: the woman he’d set sail with when he was shipwrecked!

She looked at the man, and saw her treasures scattered around the beach. Her prized flower was stuck in the hair of a pretty woman who looked kind of familiar.

“Crap. It got you too, huh?”

  2. Chad couldn't believe it, but he was getting bored of Hawaii. The hotel was cozy, the views were breathtaking, the beaches were perfect. Somehow, even with all this, he just couldn't enjoy himself. With only 3 more days left in his vacation, he was starting to get worried. He sat in the hotel lobby with a plethora of brochures on the coffee table, scanning and browsing like his life depended on it.

"Aloha! Beautiful morning, isn't it?" A large man, most likely a native, approached Chad and sat down next to him on the couch, making it creak. "What's all this? Trying to find a good time on your vacation, huh? Buddy, you're trying to hard!" The man slapped Chad's back. Chad cleared his throat and scooted away.

"Look, I don't have much time left here. I haven't been able to enjoy myself yet, so please let me salvage my vacation in peace?" The man quaked with laughter. "Buddy, you're in paradise. No brochure is gonna get you peace of mind." He poked Chad in the chest. "It's gotta come from within." Chad shook his head, still eyeing the brochures.

The man growled and swept his arm across the table, clearing it of paper. "Look here, you want a real vacation? Really wanna get away from it all?" Chad nodded. The man thumbed towards the check-in desk. "Go to the guy over there, ask for the Unforgettable package. You won't regret it." And with that, the man left.

Chad sat there for a moment, looking at the brochures on the floor. "Well, nothing's caught my eye yet..." He went over and asked the receptionist about this "Unforgettable Package."

The receptionist smiled. "Ah, you're in for a treat. I overheard your predicament. For you, it's on the house." Chad shook his head, insisting on what it actually was. "Well, I can't say, really. It's different for everyone. But we've never had a complaint in 20 years." The receptionist smiled and tickled the keyboard. "There. We'll have someone take the package up to your room. Enjoy!"
